How much should I spend on a turbo trainer?

Dear Turbo Trainer Expert, I am trying to get fit for next summer and my fitness always lets me down during the first few months of spring when i have to burn off the Christmas pudding. So, i am considering buying a turbo trainer. How much do i need to spend to get a decent one with some resistance control that will last if i really get into it? Thanks James

Hi James,

Well firstly nice one for making the positive decision to turbo train over winter - it can be hard to motivate yourself, but I like your outlook. The most basic trainers can be had for under £100 - the likes of Wiggle and Chain Reaction always have some cracking deals on - so well worth checking them out. As for what you really need - well it depends.

(above) The Elite Mag Lite is a cracking trainer for under £100

I personally recon spend as little as you can to get a basic model - the advanced functions are all well and good on the expensive models but if (and i think many people have found this) you have a flight of fancy with it and decide turbo training is boring and don't use it - it's simply a waste of cash. So my recommendation would be this:

  • Spend less than £100
  • See if you like turbo training before spending money on a bells and whistles model
  • Subscribe to Eurosport and rig your computer/TV up in front of the trainer
  • Choose your favorite music and get pumped up for training
  • Make sure you are enjoying it - as the benefits will show.

Hope that helps

Johnny
